Abstract
Herbal hepatotoxicity is a one of the most often encountered controversial issue in medical society. Someone believe herbs are totally safe or someone regard treating with herbs are the very common cause of hepatotoxicity. But there are no compared clinical hepatotoxicity study between herbal and conventional medicine. We investigated incidence of patients with abnormal liver function who treated with herbal or conventional medicine in Dongguk University International Hospital, retrospectively. Each group consisted of 50 patients, had admitted longer than 30days during a year of 2007, and patients who had abnormal liver function test or liver-related disease when admission were excluded. We compared levels of albumin, total bilirubin, AST/ALT. As a result, the incidence of AST, ALT elevation in CT (conventional treatment) group showed more common than TKM (traditional Korean medicine) group (p=0.031, P=0.016) during admission. The incidence of albumin decrement of both groups was also higher in CT group than TKM group (p=0.001). Then, we recommend careful to use a medicine and supply nutrition in patient with liver disease or marginal liver reserve.
